Eagle Scout Patio Project

American Legion Post 130 is very grateful for great work completed by Boy Scout Troop 349.  On May 16, 2015 they rehabilitated the Post 130 patio as an Eagle Scout Project.  Rehabilitation included disposal of unserviceable furniture, cleaning and painting serviceable patio furniture, sweeping and power-washing the concrete, painting the raised concrete edging, and installing solar-powered lighting. Considering how wet the summer has been, we were fortunate it did not rain that day.  Many thanks!

Annual Post 130 Officer Elections, May 13 at 7 pm

Annual Officer Elections
Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 7 p.m.

Mark your calendars for this important annual event!

Post 130 is holding its annual officer elections. This is the most important meeting of the year for you to influence the coming year. This is a long e-mail so you may want to save this for reference.

Key Information
Nominations: All candidates must be nominated by April 13 (30 days prior to the election). There are two ways to nominate someone. First, you can nominate someone at the membership meeting on April 8, 7:30 pm. Second, you can nominate someone by stopping by Post 130 by April 13 and writing their name on the nomination sheet.

All officers are expected to attend membership meetings and executive committee meetings unless there is a reason to prevent attendance such as work or family obligations or illness. It is vitally important to the health and well-being of the Post that elected officers actively participate in Post affairs and operations.

Post 130 is in the midst of a strong revival compared to 10 years ago. Because of the active participation of officers and members, Post 130 is growing financially and in membership but we need your support.

The following positions will be up for election:

Post Commander
First Vice Commander
Second Vice Commander
Third Vice Commander
Judge Advocate
Finance Officer
Service Officer
Executive Committee members (4 positions)

Boy Scouts’ Annual Mulch Sale

Boy Scout Troop 349 is taking orders for their annual mulch sale.

Mulch is a great landscaping feature which does the following:

  • to conserve moisture
  • to improve the fertility and health of the soil
  • to reduce weed growth
  • to enhance the visual appeal of the area

The top quality double-shredded mulch is packaged in 3-cubic foot bags.  One bag will cover a 3 foot by 4 foot area when spread 2 inches thick, or 2 foot by 4 foot area when spread 3 inches thick.

The minimum order is 10 bags at $5 per bag.

Volume discounts are available:

  • 25 bags = $125
  • 55 bags = $275
  • 85 bags = $425

The scouts will stack your bags of mulch neatly on your driveway, on the side of your house, or backyard.  Due to time constraints on delivery day, they cannot split the delivery  to multiple areas around your house.  Unfortunately, they cannot deliver past a 3-mile radius of the city of Falls Church.

The deadline for ordering is March 8, 2015. Delivery will be made on March 14, 2015.

Wreaths Across America

On Saturday, December 13, 2014, the organization Wreaths Across America brought thousands of Christmas wreaths to be laid at the tombstone markers of Christian service members who are buried at Arlington National Cemetery.  For more information about this organization, visit their website,

Extortion 17 was the call sign for the CH-47 Chinook helicopter which crashed as the result of an insurgent attack in Wardak province, Afghanistan, on August 6, 2011.  The crash caused the death of 38 special operations servicemen.  This was the single largest loss of U.S.  service members in Afghanistan.

Results of the Teddy Bear 5K Run and 1K Run/Walk

On Sunday, September 28, 2014, the Falls Church-McLean Children’s Center held their annual Teddy Bear 5K Run and 1K Run/Walk race.   The race was a great success with 200 runners and walkers which is nearly 100 more than last year.  The Children’s Center raised over $25,000 for their annual fund through sponsorships, runner/walker registrations, donations, sales, and silent auction.  The Children’s Center was grateful to have volunteers take part such as the Falls Church Police Department, George Mason and George Marshall High Schools, Chesterbrook Elementary School, and the American Legion Post 130.

Proceeds of the race help keep the Children’s Center a full-time, year-round education program at a rate that is affordable for the community’s low-income, working parents so they can continue to work to provide for their families.   While the parents are at work, the Children’s Center provides 73 children with two nutritious meals each day and guides them to build their skills to expected levels so they can be successful in school.   Research shows that children from low-income families who are at risk of failing in school can overcome the developmental delays that are due to their families’ low income if they are able to attend a high quality preschool like the Children’s Center.

For more information about the Center, click on Falls Church-McLean Children’s Center website.

Let’s help World War II veterans of Wisconsin visit the Nation’s Capital.

Please come out and support the “fun”-raising event for the Badger Honor Flight program which raises funds and brings World War II veterans in Wisconsin to Washington, DC and Arlington to visit the WWII memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.  This posting is also listed on Post 130’s events calendar.
