Resources for Veterans

Self-Service Resources:

DD-214 FORMS ARE NOW ONLINEVeterans can now gain access to their DD-214 forms online, thanks to the National Personnel Records Center (NRPC) Web Site.  Veterans who need the form quickly for a job application or American Legion membership can access the link below to obtain a copy of their DD-214 “Armed Forces of the United States Report of Transfer or Discharge”.  Veterans and the next of kin of deceased former service members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents.

Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA).  The American Legion as a national organization and Post 130 as a local chapter provide temporary financial assistance to veterans in need.  Due to limited resources, the American Legion requires that veterans seeking TFA to show that assistance through other organizations is not available or not sufficient.  To seek TFA through Post 130, a veteran must first seek assistance from CommonHelp, the one-stop location of the Commonwealth of Virginia.  In most cases, a veteran in need must be the parent or guardian of a child who is derivatively in need of assistance.  To qualify for TFA, a veteran must provide his or her DD-214 showing an honorable discharge, proof of identity (such as a driver’s license), birth certificates of children he or she has in the household, and marriage license (if applicable).  To begin the application process, the veteran should call Post 130 at (703) 533-1945 and ask to make an appointment with the Post 130 service officer.  The Post 130 service officer will counsel the veteran on available resources and courses of action and then prepare an application to be sent to the Virginia American Legion which will approve or reject the TFA application.  The most important aspect of the TFA application is good organization of documents and information.  The TFA process can take a few weeks at a minimum and the veteran should pursue assistance through other organizations.
